Akpabio’s Earlier Revelation on Dickson’s NDC Gains Attention After High-Profile Defections

A political development first disclosed months ago by Senate President Godswill Akpabio is drawing renewed attention following a fresh wave of defections to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a video dated March 13 from Nigeria’s Senate proceedings, Akpabio revealed that Bayelsa lawmaker Henry Seriake Dickson had launched the NDC shortly after defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), positioning himself as the leader of the new political platform.

The development has gained fresh relevance this week after the defection of former governors Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, both prominent figures in the 2023 presidential race. Obi, who previously contested under the Labour Party, and Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), reportedly joined the NDC after exiting the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to sources within the party, the new entrants were formally received by Dickson, who presented them with party membership cards alongside other defectors in what observers describe as a strategic consolidation effort ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NDC is said to be positioning itself as a unifying platform, with party leaders emphasizing collaboration on key national issues such as education reform, economic stability, and security. Analysts suggest that the addition of high-profile political figures could significantly boost the party’s visibility and credibility in an increasingly competitive political environment.

However, the party faces immediate challenges. It is reportedly working against time to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registration deadline of May 10, while also navigating legal and procedural hurdles associated with its formation.

Political observers say the convergence of influential figures within the NDC could reshape alliances and influence the trajectory of the 2027 elections. Still, questions remain about the party’s organizational strength, policy direction, and ability to sustain momentum in the coming months.

As events continue to unfold, Akpabio’s earlier remarks now appear to have foreshadowed what could become a significant realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape.
