Obi Calls for Improved Electricity Supply at NDC Aspirants Dinner

Former Labour Party presidential candidate and 2027 presidential hopeful Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to demand better governance and improved electricity supply, arguing that the country cannot continue to operate far below its economic potential.

Obi made the remarks on Monday evening during the aspirants dinner organized by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where party leaders, aspirants, supporters, and stakeholders gathered ahead of the 2027 elections.

Addressing attendees, Obi lamented Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges, noting that despite having an installed generation capacity reportedly exceeding 13,000 megawatts, the country still struggles to distribute between 4,000 and 4,500 megawatts consistently.

He contrasted Nigeria’s situation with South Africa, which he said generates more than 40,000 megawatts, stressing that Africa’s largest economy should not remain trapped in chronic power shortages.

According to Obi, inadequate electricity continues to cripple businesses, discourage industrial growth, worsen unemployment, and limit opportunities for young Nigerians.

“Our children cannot go on like this,” Obi reportedly told supporters, while emphasizing the need for citizens to actively demand accountability and better governance from political leaders.

The dinner served as one of the NDC’s biggest political gatherings since the party’s emergence earlier in 2026 and reflected ongoing efforts to build unity ahead of the next general elections.

The event also featured interactions with several prominent personalities, including music star 2Baba and former Bayelsa State governor Henry Seriake Dickson, who is regarded as a leading figure within the party.

Obi’s appearance comes amid growing political momentum surrounding the NDC following recent defections and alliances involving influential opposition figures, including former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Supporters of the party described the gathering as evidence of increasing opposition coordination and renewed hope for political change ahead of 2027.

Critics, however, questioned whether political speeches and elite gatherings would translate into practical solutions for Nigerians currently facing inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and rising living costs.

Political analysts say Obi’s continued focus on economic productivity, infrastructure, and governance reforms remains central to his political messaging and appeal among many urban and youth voters.

Observers also note that electricity and energy reform are expected to remain key national issues heading into the 2027 elections, given their direct impact on economic growth and everyday life in Nigeria.
