The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, who passed away after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.
Kareem’s death was announced on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, by the Ogun State chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN). The announcement was made by the association’s Executive Governor, Owolabi Ajasa, in a statement shared on social media.
The actress had previously made a public appeal for financial assistance as she struggled to fund her cancer treatment. In a video circulated during her illness, Kareem revealed that her family had already spent a significant amount on her medical care.
“I’m a breast cancer patient. It has been going on for a while. My family has spent a lot of money; I’ve come to seek help,” she said.
Kareem also disclosed that she had two young children while appealing to Nigerians and well-wishers to support her treatment.
Following news of her death, TAMPAN Ogun State expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed financially, offered prayers and provided encouragement during her illness.
“Sadly, despite all our efforts and prayers, Atinuke has passed on and answered the final call,” Ajasa said in the statement.
Her death has renewed concerns about the financial burden associated with cancer treatment, particularly for patients who require prolonged medical care. Kareem’s public appeal had highlighted the difficulties her family faced while trying to sustain her treatment.
The actress’ passing also comes shortly after the death of veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who reportedly died following a battle with cancer.
Atinuke Kareem’s death represents another painful loss for the Yoruba film industry, with colleagues, fans and loved ones left to mourn the actress and remember her contribution to Nollywood.
