BAUCHI — A trending video purportedly showing Senator Shehu Buba Umar of Bauchi State travelling on an aircraft with a man alleged to be a notorious bandit leader has triggered renewed calls for security agencies to investigate the identities of the individuals involved and the circumstances surrounding the journey.
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, has generated public concern amid persistent security challenges involving banditry, kidnapping and organised criminal activities in parts of northern Nigeria.
The person accompanying the senator has been identified in social-media claims as “Kachalla,” a term commonly used in some northern communities to refer to a leader or commander. However, the identity of the individual in the footage, as well as the circumstances under which the senator and the unidentified man were travelling together, have not been independently established.
The allegations have also prompted renewed calls for the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security and intelligence agencies to examine the footage and determine whether it provides evidence of any connection between the senator and criminal elements.
The controversy comes against the background of previous allegations circulating online linking Senator Shehu Buba Umar to alleged bandit sponsorship. Such allegations are serious and require evidence and official investigation before they can be treated as established facts.
Critics argue that the continued circulation of the video without a clear explanation from the relevant authorities risks deepening public distrust in Nigeria’s security institutions.
The central question now is whether security agencies will establish who the individual seen with the senator is, where the flight originated, its destination, when the footage was recorded, and whether there was any legitimate reason for the two men to travel together.
Calls for investigation have intensified, with members of the public insisting that allegations involving elected officials and suspected criminal networks should not be dismissed merely because they originate from social media.
At the same time, due process requires that the senator and anyone identified in the footage be given an opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding the encounter before conclusions are reached.
The controversy therefore places the security agencies under renewed pressure to either confirm, clarify or debunk the allegations with credible evidence, rather than allowing speculation to dominate public discourse.
For many Nigerians, the issue is bigger than one senator or one video: it is a test of whether allegations involving political figures and suspected criminal networks will receive the same level of scrutiny expected of ordinary citizens.
Until an official investigation establishes the facts, the claims remain allegations and should not be treated as proof of bandit sponsorship or criminal association.
