Mike Arnold Questions Official Account of Ngoshe Hostage Release

American missionary and commentator on Nigerian affairs Mike Arnold has disputed the Nigerian military’s account of the recent release of hundreds of abductees from Ngoshe in Borno State, alleging that the outcome resulted from negotiations rather than a military rescue operation.

According to Arnold, individuals he described as eyewitnesses informed him that soldiers allegedly delivered between ₦3 billion and ₦5 billion to Boko Haram commanders in exchange for the release of captives. He also claimed that those released were primarily Muslim women and children, while Christian women and children allegedly remain in captivity.

Arnold stated that the captives had been held in Gavva, a village near the Mandara Mountains and located only a few kilometers from a military base in Ngoshe. He argued that the proximity of the location to military installations raises questions about official assertions that the hostages were freed through military operations.

In a social media post, Arnold rejected the military’s characterization of the event as a rescue mission. He further alleged that the development reflected broader concerns about the treatment of Christian communities in parts of northern Nigeria.

Arnold’s allegations follow an announcement by the Nigerian Army that approximately 360 abductees were freed during operations in the Mandara Mountain region of Borno State. Military authorities described the development as a successful rescue mission and a significant achievement in ongoing efforts against Boko Haram insurgents.

The Ngoshe abductions drew national attention after hundreds of women and children were reportedly taken by Boko Haram during attacks on communities in March 2026. Reports from mediation efforts indicated that insurgents had issued demands and ultimatums concerning the captives prior to their eventual release.

As of the time of this report, no independent evidence has been made public to substantiate Arnold’s claims regarding alleged ransom payments, military involvement in negotiations, or the religious composition of those released and those who may remain in captivity. The Nigerian military has maintained that the captives were rescued during operations against insurgents in the Mandara Mountains.

The differing accounts underscore the ongoing debate surrounding counterinsurgency operations in northeastern Nigeria and the circumstances surrounding the release of civilians abducted by Boko Haram.
