Labour Party Sets Timetable for Primaries, Suspends Erring Members

The Labour Party has officially announced its schedule for primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling a major step in its preparations for the national political contest. This decision was made during a statutory meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, with observers from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ensuring compliance with electoral regulations.

According to the timetable:

  • Submission of Membership Register to INEC – April 15, 2026

  • State and National Assembly Primaries – Friday, May 15, 2026

  • Presidential Primary Election – Saturday, May 23, 2026

The NEC also ratified recent party congresses at ward, local government, and state levels, as well as the National Convention scheduled for April 11, 2026.

Disciplinary Action Against Erring Members

Following reports of violence and sabotage at the Party Secretariat, allegedly carried out by rogue elements, NEC approved the suspension of multiple members involved in acts of indiscipline and anti-party activities. The list includes Eneyi G. Zidougha, Hilda Doukubo, Lincolin Charles, Muhammed Sabitu Aliyu, Ogar Osim, among others, reflecting the party’s commitment to enforcing internal discipline.

Membership Expansion and Modernization

The Labour Party is expanding its membership register using a hybrid system that combines digital registration with manual registration in rural communities. This initiative aims to strengthen participatory democracy, enhance transparency, and modernize party administration in line with the Electoral Act 2026.

Interim Leadership and Continuity Measures

All existing vacancies in party structures will be filled with interim leaders to ensure smooth administration pending the conduct of substantive congresses. The NEC empowered the National Leadership to make acting appointments, promoting stability ahead of the primaries.

Judicial Endorsement and Leadership Confidence

NEC welcomed the Federal High Court ruling affirming Senator Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman. The council passed a vote of confidence on her leadership, the Interim National Working Committee, and other key party and labor leaders, including Governor Alex Otti. INEC’s prompt compliance with the court’s decision was also commended.

This development demonstrates the Labour Party’s determination to organize a transparent, orderly, and legally compliant primary process, positioning the party strategically for the 2027 elections while reinforcing internal discipline and unity.
