Kwankwaso Rejects ‘Political Stooge’ Narrative Amid Rift Speculation with Governor Yusuf

Leading figure of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Kwankwasiyya movement leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has reportedly pushed back against comments suggesting that Abba Kabir Yusuf is merely his political stooge.

The remarks come amid growing political speculation surrounding the relationship between the former Kano State governor and his successor, whose administration has frequently been associated with the influence of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Kwankwaso reportedly addressed the issue while responding to criticisms and public commentary surrounding Yusuf’s leadership and decision-making style.

According to him, attempts to portray the Kano State governor as lacking independence are unfair and politically motivated.

The former presidential candidate emphasized that Yusuf remains a constitutionally elected governor capable of making his own decisions and leading the state administration responsibly.

Political observers say the comments appear aimed at countering a growing narrative among critics and opposition voices who often describe Yusuf’s government as operating under Kwankwaso’s direct control.

The Kwankwasiyya movement, built around Kwankwaso’s political influence in Kano State and northern Nigeria, remains one of the country’s most organized grassroots political blocs.

Governor Yusuf has long been viewed as a close political ally and protégé of Kwankwaso, having risen through the movement’s structure before winning the Kano governorship election.

However, recent political developments, internal alignments, and ongoing realignments ahead of the 2027 elections have intensified scrutiny over the relationship between the two leaders.

Supporters of Kwankwaso argued that political mentorship should not automatically be interpreted as political control, noting that many Nigerian politicians emerge through established political structures and alliances.

Critics, however, insist that Yusuf’s administration continues to reflect Kwankwaso’s overwhelming political influence in the state.

The comments also come at a time when the NDC is attracting growing national attention following the entry of prominent opposition figures into the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Analysts believe maintaining unity within the Kwankwasiyya movement and preserving Yusuf’s public image as an independent leader could become increasingly important as political competition intensifies nationally and within Kano State itself.
