IG Deploys Tactical Teams to Plateau Amid Rising Killings

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has deployed additional tactical teams to Plateau State as part of urgent efforts to contain renewed violence and restore peace in affected communities.

The deployment follows recent killings and attacks that have heightened tension and displaced residents in parts of the state, raising fresh concerns over the persistent security challenges facing communities in the North-Central region.

According to the Nigeria Police Force, the tactical units have been directed to intensify intelligence gathering, conduct strategic patrols, respond rapidly to distress calls, and collaborate with other security agencies and local stakeholders to prevent further attacks.

The Inspector-General emphasized the need for a proactive security approach, assuring residents that the police would employ all lawful measures necessary to apprehend perpetrators and ensure they are brought to justice.

The operation is expected to involve specialised police formations with capabilities in counterterrorism, anti-kidnapping operations, and the protection of vulnerable communities.

The police leadership also appealed to citizens to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist in identifying criminal elements and preventing planned attacks.

The renewed intervention comes amid increasing calls from community leaders, civil society groups, and political figures for stronger action to address recurring communal clashes and violent attacks in Plateau State.

For years, Plateau has experienced cycles of violence involving disputes over land, resources, ethnic and religious tensions, as well as attacks by armed groups, resulting in significant loss of lives and destruction of property.

Security analysts maintain that while military and police deployments are necessary to halt immediate violence, long-term peace will require sustained dialogue, justice for victims, improved intelligence, and efforts to address the underlying causes of conflict.

Residents have expressed hope that the latest deployment will provide immediate protection to vulnerable communities and help restore normal social and economic activities.

The police have assured the public that the tactical teams will remain in the state for as long as necessary to stabilize the security situation and prevent further bloodshed.

The development underscores the continuing challenge of maintaining peace in conflict-prone areas and the ongoing demand for a coordinated national response to insecurity across Nigeria.
