The political differences between members of the El-Rufai family have taken a dramatic turn, with Bashir El-Rufai publicly attacking his elder brother, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, on social media.
Bashir, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accused Bello of taking political positions that conflicted with the interests of their family.
The confrontation unfolded through a series of posts on X, where Bashir questioned his brother’s previous political relationship with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.
Bashir appeared particularly critical of Bello’s decision to remain associated with the governor before later moving to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the political platform his father joined.
The exchange subsequently became more intense, with Bashir directing a strong warning at his elder brother.
“I will destroy you & climb my bed and sleep peacefully,” Bashir wrote in one of the posts.
The statement generated reactions from social media users, with some urging Bashir to resolve the disagreement privately rather than through public exchanges.
Bashir, however, appeared unwilling to withdraw from the confrontation. Responding to one critic who cautioned him over his comments, he said: “Sorry sir. Had to be said.”
The dispute has attracted attention partly because of the political prominence of the El-Rufai family in Kaduna State. Mohammed Bello El-Rufai is a member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, while Bashir has remained active in political commentary and public affairs.
The disagreement also comes against the backdrop of the strained relationship between Nasir El-Rufai and Governor Uba Sani. The former governor and his successor were once political allies, but their relationship deteriorated after Sani assumed office in 2023.
Bello’s political realignment has added another dimension to the family’s political story, particularly as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
The latest social media confrontation remains a family and political dispute, with some of the allegations made during the exchange yet to be independently verified.
The episode highlights the increasingly public nature of political disagreements and the challenges prominent families face when personal relationships become intertwined with competing political interests.
