Former presidential aspirant has reportedly emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress at the party’s ongoing national convention in Abuja.
The development marks a major turning point in the unfolding leadership and coalition dynamics within the ADC, coming amid intense legal and political disputes surrounding the party’s national structure and legitimacy.
Delegates at the convention were said to have endorsed Kachikwu following deliberations by the convention leadership under the legacy ADC structure, which recently secured legal recognition through a Federal High Court judgement affirming the authority of the legacy state chairmen.
Kachikwu’s emergence is expected to reshape ongoing political calculations within opposition circles, particularly as various blocs continue negotiations and strategic alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The convention itself has attracted nationwide attention following the reported dissolution of the caretaker structure previously associated with former Senate President and the election of a new National Working Committee led by Alhaji Mohammed Abdulkadir Bashir.
Political analysts say the latest outcome may further deepen scrutiny over the leadership crisis within the ADC, especially regarding which faction the will ultimately recognize as the authentic leadership of the party.
Observers also note that Kachikwu’s emergence could complicate existing coalition arrangements involving prominent opposition figures who had reportedly aligned with other blocs within the ADC structure.
As proceedings continue in Abuja, stakeholders are awaiting official communications from the party leadership and possible reactions from rival factions concerning the outcome of the convention and its broader political implications.
