Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has drawn praise from supporters and political observers following a series of diplomatic and policy engagements in Cape Town during the Spier Dialogue 2026.
On May 22, Obi first met with members of the Nigerian community in South Africa, where discussions reportedly focused on the challenges faced by Nigerians and other African migrants living abroad, including immigration concerns, economic hardship, and social tensions.
He later held separate meetings with senior South African ministers and political leaders, including Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs; Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs; and Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.
According to Obi, the discussions centered on immigration management, youth unemployment, security concerns, economic pressures, and strengthening relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
During his keynote address at the dialogue, Obi argued that Africa possesses enormous untapped potential through its mineral resources, fertile agricultural land, and youthful population but continues to struggle because of corruption, weak governance, and poor leadership choices.
He advocated for production-driven economic policies, stronger investment in education and healthcare, and greater regional cooperation as pathways toward sustainable development across the continent.
Obi also stressed that African nations must move beyond dependency on raw material exports and focus on building productive economies capable of creating jobs and reducing poverty.
Supporters across social media praised Obi’s diplomatic posture and intellectual engagement at the international forum, describing his participation as statesmanlike and reflective of visionary leadership.
Some supporters contrasted the trip with the foreign engagements of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that Obi’s speeches focused more directly on governance reform, economic productivity, and African development.
Critics, however, argued that while international engagements are important, Nigeria’s domestic challenges—including insecurity, inflation, and unemployment—require more immediate attention from political leaders.
Political analysts say Obi’s continued international visibility and policy-focused engagements are helping sustain his relevance within Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
Observers also note that his emphasis on governance, accountability, and economic transformation continues to resonate strongly among many young Nigerians and members of the African diaspora.
