Former Bayelsa State governor and leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has stated that the party offered its presidential ticket to Peter Obi without demanding any form of payment, describing the decision as part of the party’s commitment to inclusive and principle-driven politics.
Dickson made the clarification while addressing growing public discussions about the NDC’s internal processes and its approach to candidate selection ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the party’s decision to present its presidential and vice-presidential tickets without financial requirements reflects a deliberate effort to promote leadership based on merit, competence, and national interest rather than monetary influence.
He explained that the NDC’s leadership, since its formation, has aimed to differentiate itself from traditional political practices where aspirants are often required to pay significant sums to secure party nominations.
Dickson emphasized that Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate and prominent political figure, was offered the opportunity to lead the party’s presidential ticket without any financial obligation attached. He said the gesture was intended to strengthen political collaboration and build a broad-based platform capable of competing effectively in the 2027 elections.
The NDC leader noted that the party’s approach is rooted in the belief that political leadership should not be treated as a commercial transaction but as a responsibility that requires integrity, vision, and public trust.
He further explained that the decision to offer Obi the ticket was part of a broader strategy to build alliances and attract experienced political figures who share the party’s vision for national development.
The statement comes amid ongoing debates about the structure and direction of the NDC, which has experienced rapid growth since its establishment. The party has attracted attention for its attempt to position itself as a major alternative force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
However, its internal processes have also generated discussions among political observers, particularly regarding candidate selection, party financing, and leadership dynamics.
Dickson maintained that the NDC remains committed to transparency and fairness in all its dealings, stressing that its political activities are guided by principles rather than financial inducements.
He added that the party’s decision to forgo monetary requirements for ticket allocation was intended to encourage credible individuals to participate in politics without fear of financial barriers.
According to him, this approach is necessary to restore public confidence in the political system and ensure that leadership positions are accessible to qualified Nigerians regardless of wealth.
Peter Obi, who has remained a key figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, has not formally responded to the latest remarks. However, his political influence continues to shape discussions ahead of the 2027 elections, where coalition building and strategic alliances are expected to play a significant role.
Obi’s strong showing in the 2023 presidential election significantly raised his national profile, particularly among young voters and urban populations, making him a central figure in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Political analysts note that the NDC’s claim could be aimed at reinforcing its image as a reform-oriented party seeking to challenge conventional political practices in the country.
They argue that offering high-profile figures a ticket without financial conditions may be part of a broader strategy to attract reform-minded politicians and build electoral credibility ahead of the next general election.
Supporters of the party have praised the decision, describing it as a bold step toward reducing the commercialization of politics in Nigeria. They believe it could help encourage greater participation from qualified individuals who are discouraged by the high cost of political engagement.
However, critics have urged the NDC to provide clearer details on its nomination process and internal governance structures to ensure transparency and accountability in practice.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027, the NDC is expected to continue defending its approach to leadership selection and party management while expanding its national presence.
Dickson reiterated that the party’s goal is to build a credible political alternative that prioritizes competence, integrity, and service to the Nigerian people over financial considerations.
