ADC State Chapters Declare Support for Atiku Ahead of 2027 Primaries

Several state chapters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have reportedly thrown their support behind former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for May 25.

Support rallies and endorsements were reported in states including Kebbi State, Abia State, and Enugu State, where party supporters gathered to publicly back Atiku as their preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

Videos circulating online showed enthusiastic crowds waving party banners and chanting support slogans for the former vice president, whom supporters describe as the most experienced opposition figure capable of challenging the ruling government.

In Kebbi State, party loyalists also reportedly endorsed former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami for the governorship race, signaling broader political alignments within the party structure.

Sources within the ADC claimed that Atiku’s camp has secured support from chapters across as many as 32 states, although the party leadership has not officially confirmed those figures.

Supporters of Atiku argue that his long political experience and previous presidential campaigns position him as a strong contender capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.

They maintain that the country needs experienced leadership to tackle rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and economic uncertainty ahead of the next electoral cycle.

However, the endorsements have also triggered differing opinions within the party.

Some party members and political observers questioned the timing of the endorsements, arguing that the primaries should remain open and competitive until delegates make their final decision.

In Enugu State, some youth groups within the ADC reportedly expressed support for former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi instead, highlighting internal diversity of opinion within the opposition party.

The development comes amid increasing political realignments and coalition-building efforts across Nigeria as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Analysts say the ADC primaries are becoming one of the most closely watched opposition contests, especially with speculation surrounding possible alliances among major political figures seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party leadership is expected to conduct the presidential primary on May 25, where delegates will decide the ADC’s flagbearer for the 2027 race.
