Abia ADC Disowns Planned Congresses, Affirms Existing Leadership Tenure Umuahia

The Abia State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced that it is not organising or participating in any ward, Local Government Area (LGA), or state congresses reportedly scheduled between April 7 and April 14, 2026.
In a statement issued by the State Chairman, Hon. Don Norman Obinna, the party distanced itself from the planned activities, urging members, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard any claims suggesting its involvement.
The clarification follows recent developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a Court of Appeal ruling which upheld the status quo ante bellum in the ongoing leadership dispute within the party. As a result, INEC removed the National Working Committee (NWC) led by David Mark from its official portal and directed its state offices not to monitor the proposed ADC congresses and national convention.
According to the Abia ADC, these developments mean that the tenure of its current ward, LGA, and state executives remains valid and operational.
The party leadership called on members to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on promoting the party’s ideals, warning against any actions that could disrupt peace across the state.
It also assured stakeholders that efforts are underway to stabilise and reposition the party, with a promise to provide further updates as the situation evolves.
The statement highlights the continuing internal challenges within the ADC at the national level, with state chapters increasingly aligning their positions with legal rulings and directives from electoral authorities.
