Birnin Kebbi — Former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State, Aminu Bande, has formally resigned from the party, with confirmed plans to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a significant political realignment.
A resignation letter dated April 5, 2026, and addressed to his ward chairman in Nasarawa I, Birnin Kebbi, shows that the retired Major General stepped down from the PDP with immediate effect.
“I write to formally tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party effective from today Sunday, 5th April, 2026,” Bande stated in the letter.
He explained that his decision followed “deep consideration, reflection and engagements” with associates and stakeholders, indicating a deliberate and strategic move. He further noted that the step became necessary to align with what he described as the collective will of his people to adopt “a more stable platform” capable of promoting “good, just and fair governance” for Kebbi State and Nigeria at large.
Although the letter did not explicitly mention his next political destination, sources have now confirmed that Bande has concluded arrangements to join the ADC, a party increasingly positioning itself as a rallying platform for opposition figures across the country.
Bande, a retired military officer and prominent political figure, was the PDP’s flagbearer in the 2023 gubernatorial election in Kebbi State, where he emerged as a leading opposition voice. His defection is expected to significantly alter the political landscape in the state, potentially strengthening the ADC’s structure and influence ahead of future elections.
Political analysts say the move reflects broader shifts within Nigeria’s opposition space, as internal challenges within major parties like the PDP continue to drive high-profile defections and strategic repositioning.
This development has further weakened the out-of-favour ADC and engender the ADC as the People’s slim hope to escape from the bad government of the APC.
