The New Nigeria Peoples Party has denied joining any political coalition or entering into a formal working arrangement with other parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party also warned members of the public, political parties and prospective candidates against dealing with individuals it described as impostors claiming to represent the NNPP.
The NNPP’s position was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr Boniface Aniebonam.
Aniebonam said the party remained independent and had not authorised any individual or group to negotiate an alliance on its behalf.
He alleged that some individuals who had been expelled from the party were presenting themselves as NNPP leaders and candidates, with the intention of collecting money from political parties and aspirants.
According to him, some of those individuals had been recognised as no longer representing the party through court judgments and decisions by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He therefore advised any political party, candidate or coalition that may have paid money to such individuals for political alliances or nomination-related arrangements to seek a refund from those they dealt with.
“The authentic NNPP with basket of fruits logo is not a member of any coalition,” Aniebonam said, stressing that the party remained an independent political organisation.
The clarification comes amid continuing efforts by several opposition parties and political groups to establish alliances ahead of the 2027 elections. Recent reports have indicated that some opposition parties have been discussing broader cooperation, although the composition and objectives of such arrangements vary among the groups involved.
The NNPP said, however, that it had not ruled out the possibility of strategic cooperation in the future.
Aniebonam said the party would announce any decision regarding an alliance or strategic arrangement with another political party if and when such a decision became necessary.
“For the avoidance of doubt,” he said, the party’s recognised officials had the mandate to speak and make decisions on behalf of the authentic NNPP.
He listed himself as Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr Agbo Major as National Chairman, Oginni Olaposi as National Secretary, Prince Toyese as National Treasurer and Aisha Kade Onyia as National Woman Leader. The party identified these officials as those recognised by INEC to represent its leadership.
The statement also sought to draw a distinction between the NNPP and individuals or groups operating outside the party’s recognised leadership structure.
The development is significant as political parties and support groups continue preparations for the 2027 general elections, with discussions around coalitions, strategic alliances and joint political platforms taking place across the opposition space.
The NNPP’s latest statement indicates that, as of September 22, 2026, the party had not formally joined any coalition. Any future alliance, according to the party, would be announced through its recognised leadership.
The party’s clarification also underscores the need for aspirants and political organisations seeking alliances to verify the identity and authority of individuals negotiating on behalf of political parties before making payments or entering into agreements.
For now, the NNPP maintains that it remains an independent political party and has not authorised any coalition arrangement for the 2027 election.
