Anambra Governor Soludo Faces Fresh Criticism Over Governance, Economic Priorities

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has come under fresh criticism from political commentator Kingsley Ubani, who accused the governor of prioritising public attention over governance and failing to deliver on key expectations nearly five years into his administration.
In a statement, Ubani recalled that about seven months after assuming office in March 2022, Soludo issued a widely discussed public statement titled “History Beckons, I Will Not Be Silent,” arguing that the governor had become distracted from the responsibilities of governing the state.
According to him, Soludo should have focused on building his own legacy rather than commenting on broader political issues, adding that the governor’s performance should now be judged by the state of Anambra under his leadership.
Ubani questioned the administration’s record on institutional development and investment attraction, claiming that expectations of increased foreign direct investment had not been met. He also criticised the state government’s previous comments regarding the tax contributions of SABMiller, arguing that such public remarks could discourage potential investors.
The critic further faulted the administration’s economic policies, particularly its decision to opt out of certain intervention programmes, including the NG-CARES initiative. He contended that the decision denied some farmers and small business owners in Anambra access to support available to beneficiaries in other states.
Ubani also questioned the state’s infrastructure priorities, including the construction of a second airport, arguing that the project reflected poor economic planning at a time when other developmental needs remained pressing.
He concluded by urging the governor to place greater emphasis on governance and measurable development outcomes rather than public messaging and political visibility.
Governor Soludo’s administration has consistently defended its policies, maintaining that its economic decisions are aimed at ensuring fiscal discipline, long-term development, and sustainable growth in Anambra State. As of the time of this report, the state government had not responded to Ubani’s latest remarks.
