Fubara Presents N1.85tn 2026 Rivers Budget Proposal With Increased Funding for Government Agencies

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has presented a proposed N1.85 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, featuring a significant increase in overhead allocations for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as part of efforts to improve government operations and service delivery.

The budget proposal, presented before the Rivers State House of Assembly, includes a reported 50 percent increase in overhead expenditure for MDAs. The governor said the adjustment was necessary to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance efficiency, and support the effective implementation of government programmes across the state.

According to Fubara, the 2026 budget is designed to focus on infrastructure development, economic growth, social services, and projects aimed at improving the welfare of residents. He emphasized that the administration remains committed to executing policies that will positively impact communities and create opportunities for sustainable development.

The governor explained that increased funding for government agencies would enable them to perform their statutory responsibilities more effectively, reduce operational challenges, and improve coordination in delivering public services. He added that careful monitoring would be implemented to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public resources.

The proposed budget comes amid ongoing efforts by state governments across Nigeria to address economic pressures, rising costs of projects, and growing demands for improved public services. Analysts note that increased overhead spending often attracts scrutiny, as governments are expected to balance administrative costs with investments in infrastructure and development programmes.

Fubara assured residents that the 2026 budget would prioritize projects that contribute to economic expansion, job creation, healthcare improvement, education, and social development. He also pledged that the government would continue to promote responsible financial management while ensuring that public funds are directed toward areas with measurable benefits.

The budget proposal will now undergo legislative review, with lawmakers expected to examine the details, make necessary adjustments, and determine whether it meets the development priorities of Rivers State.
