PenCom Nears Launch of Pension Industry Infrastructure Fund to Boost Development

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced that plans are at an advanced stage for the launch of a Pension Industry Infrastructure Fund, a major initiative designed to channel pension assets into financing critical infrastructure projects across Nigeria.

The Director-General of PenCom disclosed that the proposed fund is expected to provide long-term financing for key sectors, including transportation, energy, housing and other strategic infrastructure essential for economic growth. According to the commission, the initiative aligns with efforts to deepen the country’s capital market while creating sustainable investment opportunities for pension contributors.

The PenCom boss explained that the fund is being developed in collaboration with relevant government institutions, pension fund administrators and private sector stakeholders to ensure it operates within strict regulatory and risk management frameworks.

He emphasized that contributors’ retirement savings would remain protected, noting that investments would only be made in commercially viable projects capable of delivering competitive returns while preserving the safety of pension assets.

Industry experts have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure financing gap. They noted that pension funds represent a reliable source of long-term capital that can support national development when invested prudently under transparent governance structures.

The proposed infrastructure fund is also expected to stimulate job creation, attract private sector participation and improve public infrastructure, thereby contributing to increased economic productivity and improved living standards.

PenCom reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding pension assets while promoting investments that generate value for contributors and the broader economy. The commission added that all projects financed through the fund would undergo rigorous due diligence and comply with existing investment guidelines.

The launch of the Pension Industry Infrastructure Fund is anticipated to mark a new phase in Nigeria’s efforts to leverage domestic capital for sustainable infrastructure development and long-term economic transformation.
