Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has met with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso during a courtesy visit in Kano, a meeting that has generated political interest as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
Kwankwaso, who is now the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), described Obasanjo as an esteemed national leader during the visit. The meeting took place at Obasanjo’s temporary residence in Kano, although neither side disclosed details of their discussions.
The absence of an official communiqué has fueled speculation among political observers, with many interpreting the encounter as another indication of ongoing consultations among influential political figures ahead of the 2027 elections. However, neither Obasanjo nor Kwankwaso announced any political endorsement or electoral agreement following the meeting.
The visit came shortly before Kwankwaso attended a traditional turbaning ceremony at the Emir’s Palace in Kano, where he joined other dignitaries, including politician Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, at the cultural event.
Political analysts note that Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most influential electoral battlegrounds, making high-profile meetings involving prominent political leaders subject to close public scrutiny.
Kwankwaso’s recent emergence as the running mate to Peter Obi on the NDC ticket has further intensified interest in his political engagements, particularly in northern Nigeria, where he retains a significant support base.
While observers continue to speculate about the significance of the meeting, both leaders have presented it as a routine courtesy visit, leaving the political implications open to interpretation.
As the countdown to the 2027 general elections continues, interactions among leading political figures are expected to remain a focal point of national political discourse, especially in strategically important states such as Kano.
