Mr. Akor Christian Oche, popularly known as Due Process, has called for the immediate resignation of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) following public outrage over a viral video that allegedly showed police officers waving at a convoy believed by many Nigerians to be carrying terrorists in the Northeast.
In a statement, Due Process expressed deep concern over both the conduct of the officers seen in the footage and the response of the Nigeria Police Force to the controversy. He argued that the explanation offered by the police leadership has failed to address critical questions raised by Nigerians and has instead fueled further suspicion and distrust.
According to him, at a time when communities across the country continue to suffer deadly attacks from terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers, any conduct by security personnel that appears to show friendliness or tolerance toward suspected criminal elements is unacceptable and must be thoroughly investigated.
Due Process described the police statement reportedly identifying those in the convoy as vigilantes as “another unbelievable claim” that has only deepened public concern.
“It is shocking that at a time when Nigeria is engulfed by terrorism and insecurity, the police would attempt to justify the actions of officers seen in the viral video by describing the individuals in the convoy as vigilantes. Nigerians deserve facts, not explanations that raise even more questions,” he said.
He maintained that the incident has damaged public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and raised serious concerns about accountability within the country’s security architecture.
“Nigerians expect the police to protect lives and confront criminal elements, not to engage in conduct that creates the impression of sympathy, familiarity, or cooperation with those responsible for insecurity,” he added.
Due Process further argued that leadership requires accountability, insisting that the IGP should take responsibility for the actions of officers under his command and resign in the interest of restoring public trust in law enforcement institutions.
The activist also called for an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the viral video, urging the Federal Government and relevant oversight agencies to ensure that the truth is established and that any officer found culpable is sanctioned accordingly.
While the Nigeria Police Force has denied allegations of wrongdoing and offered its own account of the incident, the controversy continues to generate widespread debate, with many Nigerians demanding greater transparency and accountability from security agencies.
Due Process concluded by stressing that public confidence in the fight against terrorism can only be strengthened when security institutions uphold the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and responsibility.
