Peter Obi Mourns Obidient Leader Benedict Inaede, Celebrates His Legacy of Grassroots Activism

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has led tributes to Benedict Inaede, the late Edo State Secretary of the Obidient Movement, whose death has drawn an outpouring of grief from supporters and members of the movement across Nigeria.

Obi expressed his condolences in a message shared on social media platform X, describing Inaede as a dedicated advocate for good governance, civic participation, and national development. The former presidential candidate praised the late activist for his unwavering commitment to the ideals of the Obidient Movement and his efforts to mobilize citizens toward political engagement.

Inaede, who was elected Edo State Secretary of the Obidient Movement in July 2025, was widely regarded as one of the movement’s active grassroots organizers in the South-South region. He reportedly died at the age of 49, leaving behind a legacy that many supporters say was defined by service, dedication, and a passion for social change.

In his tribute, Obi acknowledged the contributions of the late activist to the growth and sustainability of the movement, noting that individuals like Inaede played a vital role in strengthening democratic participation and inspiring citizens, particularly young people, to become involved in public affairs.

The Obidient Movement emerged as a major political force during the 2023 general elections, attracting widespread support from young Nigerians, professionals, and civil society advocates who rallied behind Obi’s presidential campaign. Although the movement began as a political support structure, many of its members have continued to engage in advocacy, community development initiatives, and political mobilization.

Supporters described Inaede as one of the movement’s committed foot soldiers whose efforts helped expand its reach in Edo State and beyond. Friends and colleagues recalled his dedication to organizing meetings, educating voters, and promoting the movement’s message of accountability and good governance.

The announcement of his passing triggered an emotional response from members of the Obidient community across the country. Social media platforms were flooded with messages honoring his contributions and expressing sympathy to his family, friends, and fellow activists.

Among those who paid tribute was Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the interim national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, who joined other members in celebrating Inaede’s life and service. Tanko reportedly described the deceased as a loyal supporter whose commitment to the movement remained unwavering even after the conclusion of the 2023 election cycle.

Funeral activities were held in Benin City, Edo State, on June 18 and 19, drawing supporters, community leaders, friends, and political associates from different parts of the country. Attendees used the occasion to reflect on Inaede’s contributions and the impact he made within the movement.

Many participants praised Peter Obi for personally acknowledging the loss and offering words of comfort to the bereaved family and supporters. Some described Obi’s response as evidence of the close relationship he maintained with grassroots members of the movement.

The funeral ceremonies also served as a gathering point for Obidient supporters, who reiterated their commitment to preserving the values and objectives that Inaede championed during his lifetime. Speakers encouraged members to remain united and continue advocating for reforms aimed at improving governance and democratic accountability in Nigeria.

Political analysts note that the Obidient Movement remains a significant force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape as discussions about the 2027 general elections gradually intensify. Many observers believe the movement’s continued activities reflect the enduring influence of the civic engagement and political consciousness generated during the 2023 campaign season.

Supporters at the funeral pledged to honor Inaede’s memory by sustaining his commitment to community service, political participation, and grassroots mobilization. They described his life as a reminder of the important role ordinary citizens can play in shaping the future of their communities and the nation.

As tributes continue to pour in, many within the Obidient Movement say Benedict Inaede will be remembered not only for his organizational contributions but also for the passion, resilience, and dedication he brought to a cause he deeply believed in.
