Oyo Declares Tuesday Public Holiday for Islamic New Year

The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday a work-free day to mark the commencement of the new Islamic year, Hijrah 1448 AH.

The announcement was made by Governor Seyi Makinde through a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government. The governor said the holiday is intended to allow Muslim faithful across the state to celebrate the beginning of the Islamic calendar year and reflect on its spiritual significance.

Makinde congratulated Muslims in Oyo State and across Nigeria on the occasion, urging them to use the new year as an opportunity to pray for peace, unity, and progress in the state and the country.

The governor also called on residents to embrace the values of tolerance, compassion, and mutual understanding, emphasizing that peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths remains essential for the development of Oyo State.

According to the statement, all government offices, ministries, departments, and agencies in the state are expected to observe the holiday, while essential services will continue to operate as required.

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah or Muharram, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar and commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. It is regarded as one of the most important events in Islamic history and is observed by Muslims worldwide through prayers, reflection, and acts of charity.

Religious leaders in the state welcomed the declaration of the public holiday and encouraged worshippers to use the occasion to promote peace and strengthen community bonds.

The Oyo State Government reiterated its commitment to supporting religious harmony and ensuring that all major religious celebrations are observed in an atmosphere of respect and inclusiveness.
