A faction of the Labour Party has unveiled Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The announcement was made in Abuja following what party leaders described as a consensus process involving stakeholders and members of the party.
According to the party’s leadership, Okereke is a governance expert, policy strategist, and reform advocate whose experience in public policy and institutional development positions him to offer an alternative vision for Nigeria’s future. Party officials expressed confidence in his ability to address governance, economic, and development challenges facing the country.
The development comes amid ongoing leadership disputes within the Labour Party, with rival factions continuing to contest control of the party’s structures and electoral processes. The faction led by Nenadi Usman had earlier conducted preparations for presidential primaries, while the faction associated with Julius Abure continues to challenge aspects of the party’s leadership arrangements in court.
Okereke’s emergence follows the departure of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi from the party, leaving the LP searching for a new national standard-bearer ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers say the unveiling marks an important step for the Labour Party as it seeks to redefine its identity and electoral prospects in the post-Obi era. However, they note that the party’s ability to resolve its internal divisions and present a united front may be crucial to its performance in the 2027 presidential race.
The announcement further adds to an increasingly crowded political field, with major parties and emerging political movements already positioning their candidates and alliances ahead of the next general election.
