Abuja Businessman Stabbed to Death as Family Rejects Allegations Against Son

A prominent Abuja-based businessman has been stabbed to death under controversial circumstances, with his family strongly rejecting social media claims that his 21-year-old son was responsible for the killing.

The deceased, a 53-year-old businessman originally from Awka Etiti in Anambra State, was reportedly found dead at his residence in Abuja after police responded to a distress call. The incident has generated widespread attention online, particularly following reports alleging that the businessman was killed during a dispute involving money and nightlife activities.

However, members of the family have dismissed the reports as false and misleading, insisting that no evidence currently links the businessman’s son to the tragic incident.

According to sources familiar with the case, security operatives arrived at the residence after receiving an emergency alert and subsequently discovered the businessman with fatal stab wounds. Authorities immediately launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police sources confirmed that five suspects were initially taken into custody for questioning, including a family member currently serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Investigators are reportedly examining multiple angles as part of efforts to determine what led to the killing.

The businessman was widely known for his success in commerce and real estate investments. He reportedly built much of his fortune through trading activities at the popular Alaba International Market in Lagos before expanding into luxury property investments in Abuja and Lagos.

Friends and associates described him as a respected entrepreneur who had established strong business networks across several parts of Nigeria.

The incident quickly attracted public attention after several social media accounts circulated claims that the businessman’s son allegedly stabbed him during an argument over money after returning from a nightclub outing.

The unverified reports triggered intense online reactions, with many users speculating about possible family tensions and financial disagreements.

In response to the growing controversy, the family released an official statement on May 20 denying all allegations against the young man and cautioning the public against spreading unconfirmed information.

“The family strongly rejects the false narratives currently circulating online,” the statement said. “No individual has been charged or found guilty in connection with this unfortunate incident, and we urge members of the public to avoid spreading misinformation capable of causing further pain.”

The family further appealed for privacy and restraint while law enforcement agencies continue their investigation.

Relatives of the deceased also expressed concern about the emotional and reputational impact of social media speculation, warning that premature conclusions could interfere with ongoing police inquiries.

Legal analysts note that criminal investigations involving high-profile deaths often attract widespread public speculation, especially when social media platforms become flooded with unverified claims before authorities conclude their findings.

Security experts have also cautioned against trial-by-media narratives, emphasizing that only official investigations can determine responsibility in criminal cases.

Meanwhile, police authorities have maintained that investigations remain ongoing and that no formal charges have been announced against any suspect at this stage.

A senior security source familiar with the case disclosed that detectives are currently reviewing forensic evidence, witness accounts, and digital records linked to the incident.

“The investigation is still active,” the source said. “Several persons are assisting investigators with useful information, but no final conclusion has been reached.”

The tragic death has shocked residents and members of the business community in Abuja and Lagos, where the businessman reportedly maintained strong professional relationships.

Associates described him as a hardworking entrepreneur who rose from humble beginnings to become successful in electronics trading and luxury real estate investments.

The incident has also reignited conversations about security concerns, domestic disputes, and the growing role of social media in shaping public narratives around criminal investigations in Nigeria.

Observers say the rapid spread of unverified information online continues to complicate sensitive cases, often placing pressure on investigators and families involved.

As police continue their inquiries, the family has appealed to the public to allow due process to take its course while mourning the loss of their loved one.

The businessman is expected to be buried in his hometown of Awka Etiti after the completion of official investigations and funeral arrangements.
