Fresh tension erupted in Abuja on Saturday as concerned residents, environmental advocates, youths, and business operators staged a protest at Jabi Lake Park over growing uncertainty surrounding the future of the popular recreational facility.
The demonstrators gathered in large numbers at the park, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs while demanding transparency and accountability from authorities over alleged plans and ongoing concerns linked to the management and long-term status of the public space.
Protesters insisted that recreational parks and green areas are critical components of modern urban development and should remain protected for public use rather than being exposed to unchecked commercialization, privatization, or structural alterations capable of restricting public access.
Many participants described Jabi Lake Park as more than a relaxation center, arguing that the facility has evolved into one of Abuja’s most symbolic public spaces, serving as a hub for tourism, leisure, fitness, entertainment, photography, social gatherings, and family recreation.
Historical Background of Jabi Lake Park
Jabi Lake Park is located around the man-made Jabi Lake in the Jabi district of Abuja. The lake itself was originally constructed primarily to provide water support for the growing Federal Capital Territory during the early developmental years of the city.
Over time, the surrounding environment gradually transformed into a major recreational and tourism destination as Abuja expanded into one of Africa’s fastest-growing capital cities. The establishment of Jabi Lake Park and nearby commercial attractions helped turn the area into a social and economic hub attracting residents, tourists, fitness enthusiasts, and entrepreneurs.
For years, the park has hosted public events, concerts, religious gatherings, picnics, sporting activities, and community engagements. The scenic waterfront environment also made it one of the most visited outdoor relaxation spots within the Federal Capital Territory.
The growth of the nearby Jabi Lake Mall further increased commercial and social activities around the area, making Jabi one of the busiest leisure districts in Abuja.
However, concerns over urban expansion, infrastructural development, land use changes, environmental degradation, and increasing commercialization have repeatedly sparked debates among residents and environmental stakeholders regarding the preservation of public green spaces in the city.
Growing Concerns Over Public Spaces
During the protest, several residents lamented what they described as the gradual disappearance of open recreational areas within Abuja due to rapid urbanization and controversial development projects.
Environmental activists warned that shrinking green areas could worsen environmental challenges including flooding, heat buildup, pollution, and declining ecological balance within the city. They stressed that public parks are not merely luxury spaces but essential urban infrastructure that contributes to public health and environmental sustainability.
Some protesters also accused authorities of failing to adequately consult residents before initiating policies or projects affecting public assets. They called for inclusive dialogue and public participation in decisions relating to the future of recreational centers and environmental resources.
Business owners operating around the park equally expressed fears that uncertainty surrounding the facility could negatively affect tourism activities and local businesses dependent on visitor traffic.
Calls for Government Clarification
The protest has now intensified public attention on the administration of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, with many residents urging the government to issue a clear statement regarding any proposed plans concerning the park.
Participants called on authorities to preserve the park as a protected public recreational asset for future generations, insisting that development should not come at the expense of environmental sustainability and public welfare.
Security personnel were deployed to monitor the peaceful demonstration as protesters continued demanding assurances that Jabi Lake Park would remain accessible to ordinary Nigerians.
As of the time of filing this report, no official clarification had been issued by relevant authorities regarding the concerns raised by the demonstrators, leaving uncertainty and public debate growing across the Federal Capital Territory.
