The advocacy group, Women for 35%, has officially inaugurated its Niger State chapter in a move described as another significant step toward inclusive governance, women empowerment, and the promotion of affirmative action in Nigeria.
The inauguration ceremony also coincided with the one-year anniversary celebration of the AJU Morgan Elumelu Foundation, an organization committed to social impact, women inclusion, leadership development, and grassroots mobilization across the country.
In a press statement signed by Amb AJU Elumelu-James, the organization noted that the occasion reflects “one year of resilience, sacrifice, growth, and unwavering commitment to building a better future for women and the next generation.”
According to the statement, the movement has continued to expand its structures nationwide since May 22, establishing leadership networks across local governments by appointing coordinators, ambassadors, mobilizers, advocates, and grassroots leaders dedicated to advancing women’s participation in governance.
The organization emphasized that women across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones have continued to engage communities, wards, villages, and local government areas to amplify the demand for greater representation of women in leadership and decision-making positions.
The group stressed that democracy can only thrive when women are adequately represented in governance, adding that its mission extends beyond advocacy to active engagement with governments, institutions, stakeholders, and policymakers to ensure the implementation of inclusive policies.
The statement acknowledged the challenges confronting the struggle for affirmative action, including resistance and discouragement, but maintained that Nigerian women are increasingly rising to demand equal opportunities and representation.
“Today, we proudly welcome the Niger State Chapter of Women for 35% and celebrate the courageous women who have stepped forward to serve humanity, strengthen democracy, and champion the cause of affirmative action,” the statement read.
The organization described the inauguration as evidence that the movement is becoming “stronger, louder, and more determined than ever before.”
Addressing women in Niger State, the statement declared:
“This is your time. Your voices matter. Your participation matters. Your leadership matters.”
The group further reaffirmed its commitment to mobilization, advocacy, and sustained engagement until women attain their rightful place in governance and nation-building.
The statement concluded with solidarity messages for Women for 35%, the AJU Morgan Elumelu Foundation, Niger State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
