Senator Victor Umeh has expressed strong confidence in the electoral strength of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, declaring that no candidate can defeat the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate in Kano State during the 2027 general elections.
Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District, made the assertion while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the opposition party’s preparations for the forthcoming elections.
The senator said Kwankwaso’s popularity in Kano would give the NDC a significant advantage if the election is conducted transparently and fairly.
“No matter the noise they make in Kano, nobody can beat Kwankwaso there once the election is credible, transparent, free, and fair,” Umeh said.
Umeh added that he was working closely with Kwankwaso and other NDC leaders, insisting that the party was adequately prepared to compete in the 2027 elections with what he described as credible candidates.
He also pointed to the reception received by NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi during a recent visit to Port Harcourt as evidence of growing public interest in the party. According to Umeh, the large turnout demonstrated the potential support available to the opposition ahead of the election.
The senator’s comments are significant because Kano is one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states and traditionally plays an important role in determining the outcome of presidential elections. Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor, has maintained a strong political base in the state over the years.
However, Umeh’s prediction remains a political assessment rather than an electoral certainty. The 2027 election is still months away, and the final outcome will depend on voter turnout, campaign strategies, party structures and the conduct of the poll.
Kwankwaso previously contested the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party before joining forces with Obi on the NDC platform for the 2027 contest.
As political parties intensify mobilisation, Kano is expected to remain a major battleground, with the NDC, APC and other opposition groups seeking to secure the state’s influential electorate.
