The Presidency has criticised the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, describing the former Anambra State governor as “overhyped” and questioning his suitability to lead Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, made the remarks in a post on his verified X account while challenging Obi’s political record and presidential ambition.
Onanuga said Obi’s eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State did not provide the governance record required for a presidential candidate. He described the former governor as “clueless” and a “spectacular failure” during his time in office.
The presidential aide also questioned expectations among Obi’s supporters that he could transform the country if elected president. According to Onanuga, national leadership requires more than popularity and social media support, arguing that candidates should demonstrate a credible governance record.
He further accused Obi of changing his political positions and said his political worldview was influenced by his supporters on social media. The comments have added to the growing political exchanges between the ruling camp and opposition figures as preparations for the 2027 election intensify.
The development is significant because Obi remains one of the prominent opposition figures seeking to challenge President Tinubu in 2027. His strong showing in the 2023 presidential election, particularly among young voters, has continued to shape discussions about Nigeria’s opposition politics.
Obi served as Anambra State governor from 2006 to 2014, with his tenure interrupted by political and legal disputes before he returned to office. He later contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and has since emerged as the NDC’s presidential candidate for 2027.
As the 2027 election approaches, exchanges over the records, policies and leadership credentials of major candidates are expected to intensify, making governance performance a central issue in the emerging political contest.
