Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party, marking a significant development in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso disclosed that his resignation takes immediate effect, bringing to a close his tenure as the party’s National Leader and one of its most prominent figures.
Describing the decision as difficult, Kwankwaso expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve the party at its highest levels, including flying its flag as presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections. He acknowledged the support and cooperation he received during his time in the party, emphasizing that his commitment to its ideals had been sincere.
“Serving as the party’s National Leader and Presidential Candidate was both an honour and a privilege,” he stated, noting that his membership in the party had been marked by dedication and shared purpose.
However, he pointed to shifting political dynamics in the country as the primary reason for his departure. According to him, the current trajectory of Nigeria’s political environment necessitates a strategic realignment, prompting his decision to seek another political platform better positioned to deliver meaningful change.
Kwankwaso also extended gratitude to the party’s leadership structure, including the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and National Executive Committee. He further acknowledged grassroots leaders across ward and state levels, alongside loyal supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, for their unwavering dedication.
Despite his exit, the former governor signaled openness to continued collaboration with stakeholders within and beyond the party in pursuit of national development.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he affirmed.
Kwankwaso’s resignation is expected to trigger fresh political calculations ahead of future elections, as attention now turns to his next political destination and the potential implications for opposition realignments across the country.
