Benin Receives ECOWAS Electoral Support, Assures Tight Security Ahead of Presidential Poll

The Benin Republic has received a financial boost from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) ahead of its upcoming presidential election scheduled for April 12, 2026, as authorities pledge to ensure a secure and credible voting process.

The regional bloc donated $150,000 to support electoral preparations, in line with its commitment to strengthening democracy and governance across member states. The cheque was formally presented to officials of Benin’s Ministry of the Interior by representatives of the ECOWAS Long-Term Election Observation Mission (LTEOM).

Receiving the delegation in Cotonou, the Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, Eric Agossounon, expressed gratitude for the support, assuring that the funds would be used judiciously. He also commended ECOWAS for its continued solidarity, particularly following the failed military coup attempt in December 2025.

Agossounon further acknowledged the role played by key ECOWAS member states, including Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire, in supporting Benin during its recent political challenges.

Leading the ECOWAS delegation, Serigne Ka, Acting Head of the Electoral Assistance Division, outlined the mission’s objectives, which include monitoring the electoral process and engaging stakeholders to promote transparency and credibility.

On security, the Beninese government assured that a comprehensive three-tier system has been put in place to safeguard the election. The arrangement involves the police as the lead agency, supported by the National Guard and the military where necessary, under the coordination of the Chief of Defence Staff. Authorities emphasized that military intervention would only occur under exceptional circumstances.

Agossounon noted that while political campaigns have commenced peacefully, the northern region remains a potential flashpoint. However, he assured that adequate security measures have been deployed across all 12 administrative districts through National District Command Centres.

The presidential race will feature two candidates: Kossi Mbuèke Romuald Wadagni, representing the ruling coalition, and Paul Hounkpè of the opposition.

The ECOWAS mission’s engagement with stakeholders forms part of broader efforts to build confidence in the electoral process and reinforce democratic stability in the region.
