Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure a second term in office at the 2027 presidential election.
Akpabio said Nigerians would ultimately assess the performance of the Tinubu administration before deciding whether to retain the All Progressives Congress (APC) in power.
The Senate President made the remarks on Monday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, while receiving members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund and NELFund, led by Senator Muntari Dandutse.
According to Akpabio, the APC-led government inherited a difficult economic situation when it assumed office in 2023 but had introduced reforms which, in his view, have improved the circumstances of states and the wider economy.
“The current president has done a lot for Nigerians. He met an economy in shambles. When he came in, 27 states could not pay salaries and pensions, but today, the story has changed because of his reengineering and thinking out of the box,” Akpabio said.
He predicted that the administration’s record would give the APC enough material to present to voters when campaigns intensify.
“In 2027, Nigerians will separate the chaff from the grains and re-elect President Tinubu for a second term in office,” the Senate President said.
Akpabio also argued that opposition politicians challenging Tinubu would face questions about their own records in public office, while insisting that the APC had achievements in areas including the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy to highlight during the campaign.
His comments come as political activities surrounding the 2027 presidential election continue to intensify, with the ruling APC and opposition groups preparing their respective campaigns.
The prediction is significant because Akpabio is one of the most senior figures in the APC and a key political ally of the President. However, his assessment remains a political prediction, and the eventual outcome will be determined by voters at the ballot box.
Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election on the APC platform and is seeking another term in 2027. As the election approaches, the government’s economic record, cost of living, security and competing opposition platforms are expected to remain major issues for Nigerian voters.
