The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to at least 90 days before the next general elections to enable more eligible Nigerians to participate in the democratic process.
Obi made the appeal after visiting an INEC Continuous Voter Registration Centre in Enugu, shortly after attending the graduation ceremony of the Millennium College of Nursing Sciences in Awka, Anambra State.
During the visit, he observed what he described as an orderly and well-organized registration exercise and commended INEC officials for their professionalism and dedication in attending to prospective voters.
The former Anambra State governor also praised Nigerians who turned out to register, noting that their willingness to queue patiently reflected a strong commitment to democratic participation and responsible citizenship.
According to Obi, expanding the duration of the voter registration exercise would provide more eligible citizens, particularly first-time voters and those who may be unable to register within a shorter window, with an opportunity to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He stressed that broader voter participation is essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that election outcomes truly reflect the will of the people.
Obi urged INEC to consider extending the registration period to no fewer than 90 days before the general elections, arguing that greater access to voter registration would promote inclusiveness and increase public confidence in the electoral process.
Electoral observers have consistently emphasized that voter registration is a critical component of credible elections, as it determines who is eligible to participate in choosing public office holders.
Political analysts note that increasing voter registration opportunities can contribute to higher voter turnout, broader political inclusion and stronger democratic legitimacy, particularly in a country with a large youth population.
They also stress that adequate public awareness campaigns, efficient registration systems and accessible registration centres are necessary to ensure that eligible citizens are not disenfranchised.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has continued to encourage Nigerians who have attained voting age or need to update their voter information to participate in the Continuous Voter Registration exercise in accordance with its published guidelines.
Observers believe that calls for an extended registration period are likely to feature prominently in discussions on electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections, as stakeholders seek to improve citizen participation and confidence in the electoral system.
Reaffirming his commitment to democratic governance, Obi concluded by expressing optimism that Nigeria can build stronger institutions and more inclusive elections, ending his message with his familiar slogan: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
