Peter Obi Calls for Unity, Security Reform, Credible Elections and People-Centred Leadership in Nigeria

The Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress NDC, Mr Peter Obi, has called for a fundamental transformation of Nigeria, urging a shift “from isolation to innovation” through national unity, improved security, credible elections, and compassionate leadership.
Speaking during interviews on Naire TV and Secure America, Obi said Nigeria urgently requires the collective support of its citizens and the international community to overcome its mounting challenges.
According to him, the foundation for national development must begin with unity.
“Nigeria today needs transformation from isolation to innovation. The country needs all the support she can get. First is that today we need unity in Nigeria; we need to unite the country. Everybody needs to come and love each other.”
Obi argued that lasting peace and development cannot be achieved in a divided nation, stressing that rebuilding trust among Nigerians is essential to addressing the country’s security and economic crises.
Insecurity Requires Decisive Leadership
The former Anambra State governor described insecurity as a national problem affecting every part of the country, insisting that it requires a government with the commitment and political will to confront it decisively.
He noted that while different groups may perceive themselves as being disproportionately affected, the broader reality is that Nigeria is facing a general security crisis that demands urgent and coordinated action.
Obi maintained that only a compassionate, people-oriented government can effectively protect citizens and restore public confidence.
Advocates Community-Based State Policing
Speaking on security reforms, Obi reiterated his support for a community-driven approach to state policing, arguing that local communities are best positioned to identify criminal elements operating within their areas.
Drawing from his experience as Governor of Anambra State, he explained that his administration strengthened community security by providing operational vehicles, funding local vigilante groups directly, and ensuring close collaboration between community security outfits, the state government, and federal security agencies.
According to him, such a model significantly improved security in the state.
He emphasized that an effective President must be hands-on and committed to coordinating security efforts at every level of government.
“There is no way non-state actors can become stronger than the state unless there is complicity,” Obi stated, adding that with committed leadership, Nigeria’s security challenges can be substantially reduced.
Calls for International Support
Obi also welcomed constructive international engagement, particularly from the United States and other democratic partners.
He said foreign partners could assist Nigeria in strengthening security cooperation, improving governance, and supporting democratic institutions, especially during elections.
According to him, Nigeria’s democratic future depends on conducting free, fair, and credible elections that produce leaders with competence, compassion, commitment, and integrity.
He argued that leadership remains the country’s greatest challenge, insisting that credible elections are essential to producing governments capable of addressing Nigeria’s numerous problems.
Tackling Poverty, Unemployment and Corruption
Beyond insecurity, Obi highlighted widespread poverty, rising youth unemployment, and corruption as major obstacles to national development.
He called for prudent management of public resources, stressing that government should prioritize investments in productive sectors capable of generating sustainable economic growth and creating jobs for millions of unemployed young Nigerians.
He further advocated increased investment in education and healthcare, describing both sectors as indispensable pillars of national development.
Obi expressed optimism that with responsible leadership and support from the international community, Nigeria can reverse its current trajectory and embark on a path of sustainable growth, improved security, and shared prosperity.
He concluded that the country’s future depends on electing leaders who possess the capacity, compassion, commitment, and character required to transform Nigeria into a secure, united, and productive nation.
