The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State says the outcome of the recent Osun governorship election has renewed its determination to challenge incumbency in the 2027 general elections.
The party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Nasarawa, David Ombugadu, said the Osun result demonstrated that electoral power ultimately belongs to voters and cannot be guaranteed by holding political office.
Ombugadu spoke in Lafia after the party’s state congress, where he also discussed the PDP’s preparations for the next election cycle. He urged Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process and ensure that their votes are protected.
According to him, the Osun election should serve as a lesson to political parties that voters remain central to determining electoral outcomes.
“The Osun State election is proof that it is not going to be business as usual. The 2027 election is not about the power of the sitting governor, but about the power of the people,” Ombugadu said.
He said the Nasarawa PDP remained focused on rebuilding its structures despite the departure of some members to other political parties. The party currently has seven lawmakers in the state House of Assembly, compared with nine it won in the 2023 election.
Ombugadu said the party would seek to expand its representation in 2027, including making a strong bid for all 24 seats in the state Assembly.
PDP state chairman Daniel Gimba also said the Osun election had demonstrated that financial influence could not permanently determine voters’ choices. He urged residents to vote according to their convictions and protect their ballots.
The party’s position is significant as political groups across Nigeria begin preparations for the 2027 elections. For the PDP, the Osun result has provided fresh encouragement as it seeks to rebuild and regain electoral strength.
The August 15 Osun governorship election was won by incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke. The outcome has since generated discussions among political parties about voter behaviour, incumbency and strategies for the 2027 general elections.
As preparations intensify, the Nasarawa PDP says it will focus on strengthening its grassroots structure, reconciling members and creating a stronger platform ahead of the next electoral contest.
