Xenophobia: 268 Nigerians Arrive in Abuja After Deportation from South Africa

A total of 268 Nigerian nationals have arrived in the country from South Africa following recent immigration enforcement actions, amid renewed concerns over the treatment of foreign nationals and rising tensions linked to migration issues.

The returnees were reportedly deported after South African authorities carried out operations targeting individuals found to be in violation of immigration laws, including overstaying visas and irregular residency status. The development has once again drawn attention to long-standing migration tensions between both countries.

The latest arrival has triggered public debate in Nigeria, with civil society groups and diaspora advocates expressing concern over what they describe as the harsh treatment of African migrants, particularly Nigerians, in South Africa.

While South African authorities maintain that immigration enforcement is carried out strictly within the bounds of their laws, critics argue that such mass removals often deepen diplomatic sensitivities and fuel perceptions of xenophobic sentiment.

The incident has revived memories of past episodes of violence and hostility against foreign nationals in South Africa, which have periodically strained relations between Pretoria and Abuja.

Officials in Nigeria are expected to process the returnees upon arrival, with relevant agencies handling documentation, profiling, and reintegration support where necessary.

The Federal Government is also expected to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels to clarify the circumstances surrounding the latest deportation exercise and ensure that the rights of affected citizens are respected.

Analysts note that migration remains a complex issue between both countries, driven by economic pressures, labour mobility, and regional inequalities, and requires sustained diplomatic cooperation to prevent recurring tensions.

Despite periodic disputes, Nigeria and South Africa continue to maintain strong bilateral relations across trade, investment, and regional security cooperation.

As discussions continue, stakeholders have called for improved migration frameworks and stronger protections for African migrants across the continent, particularly within the context of regional integration agreements.
