Umahi Assures Public of Flood-Resistant Design on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed concerns that the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway could be vulnerable to flooding, assuring Nigerians that the project incorporates advanced engineering measures designed to withstand environmental challenges.

Speaking during an inspection of the multi-billion-naira infrastructure project, Umahi said the highway was carefully designed with modern drainage systems, elevated sections, and shoreline protection features to mitigate the risk of flooding and coastal erosion. According to the minister, extensive environmental and technical assessments were conducted before construction commenced.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the Federal Government’s flagship infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity, boosting economic activities, and enhancing transportation along Nigeria’s coastal corridor. The project is expected to link several states, facilitate trade, and create employment opportunities across the region.

Umahi noted that concerns raised by some stakeholders regarding flooding had been thoroughly addressed by project engineers and consultants. He emphasized that international construction standards are being applied to ensure the road remains durable and safe for decades.

The minister further reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure capable of supporting economic growth and national development. Construction work on various sections of the highway is currently progressing, with authorities expressing confidence in the project’s long-term sustainability and resilience.
