Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has cautioned Nigerians against enlisting in the Russian military amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, warning that participation in foreign armed conflicts could expose citizens to serious risks.
In a statement, Sani urged young Nigerians to resist offers or inducements to join any foreign military engaged in active warfare. He stressed that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in significant casualties and humanitarian challenges, making it dangerous for foreign nationals to become involved.
According to the former lawmaker, Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad should pursue legitimate avenues such as education, employment, or entrepreneurship rather than risking their lives in armed conflicts. He noted that the promise of financial rewards should not outweigh the potential dangers associated with military engagements in war zones.
Sani’s remarks come amid growing international concerns over reports of foreign nationals being recruited into military operations related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Security experts have repeatedly warned that participating in foreign wars may have legal, diplomatic, and personal consequences depending on the laws of the countries involved.
The former senator also encouraged government agencies to intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of joining foreign armed forces without proper legal authorization. He emphasized the need to protect Nigerian citizens from exploitation by individuals or groups seeking to recruit vulnerable youths.
Foreign affairs analysts say the warning highlights the importance of educating citizens about the risks associated with overseas military recruitment. They also called for stronger consular support and international cooperation to safeguard Nigerians living or working abroad.
