The United Kingdom has accused Israeli settlers of carrying out what it described as the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians in parts of the occupied West Bank, marking a significant shift in Britain’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband made the declaration in Parliament as the UK announced new measures targeting Israeli settlements, including a ban on imports of goods originating from settlements in the occupied West Bank. Britain also announced sanctions against individuals and organisations linked to settlement activity.
Miliband said the British government “agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists.” He cited the destruction of homes and infrastructure and the displacement of Palestinian families as part of the concerns behind the policy.
The UK government has also backed efforts to investigate alleged violations connected to Israel’s conduct in the Palestinian territories. The measures reflect growing international pressure over settlement expansion, settler violence and the humanitarian situation affecting Palestinians.
The development is important because Britain has historically maintained close diplomatic and security ties with Israel. The latest measures represent one of the strongest condemnations of Israeli government policies by a British administration and come amid wider international efforts to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution.
Israel has strongly rejected Britain’s position. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar described the British measures as interference and announced retaliatory steps, including plans to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem and restrictions on British officials.
The dispute comes as settlement expansion in the West Bank, including the controversial E1 project, has intensified concerns over the future viability of a Palestinian state.
Britain has reaffirmed that its measures are directed at government policies and settlement activity rather than the Israeli people or Jewish communities. The UK says its broader objective remains supporting peace, security and a negotiated two-state solution.
