KWASAA Removes Tinubu, APC Billboard Over Traffic Obstruction

The Kwara State Signage and Advertisement Agency (KWASAA) has removed a political billboard featuring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) figures, in an enforcement exercise reportedly prompted by the billboard’s obstruction of traffic and public space.
The billboard, which carries the prominent inscription “ÀJÙNLÒ – Go Forward”, features President Tinubu alongside other political figures associated with the APC. It was mounted at a busy location where vehicular and pedestrian movements take place, before officials of KWASAA moved in to dismantle the structure.
Images from the scene show KWASAA personnel in their official reflective clothing working directly on the billboard structure. One of the officials can be seen climbing the structure while another stands below, apparently supervising the removal operation.
The development comes at a time when political activities are increasingly gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties and their supporters deploying billboards, posters and other outdoor advertising materials across major cities and highways.
The removal of the Tinubu/APC billboard has consequently drawn attention, particularly because the billboard prominently displays the President and other APC figures. However, the available visual evidence establishes the involvement of KWASAA in the removal but does not, by itself, establish the agency’s official reason for the action.
If the agency’s stated reason was indeed obstruction of traffic, the action would fall within the broader responsibility of signage authorities to regulate the placement, size and positioning of outdoor advertising structures in order to protect motorists, pedestrians and public infrastructure.
Political billboards placed too close to roads, junctions, intersections or other high-traffic areas can potentially obstruct motorists’ visibility, interfere with pedestrian movement or create other public-safety concerns. Regulatory agencies therefore typically require political advertisers to comply with applicable signage and outdoor-advertising rules.
The incident also raises an important question ahead of the 2027 elections: whether the same enforcement standards will be applied consistently to campaign materials belonging to all political parties and candidates, irrespective of their political affiliation.
For political observers, the key issue will therefore not only be the removal of the Tinubu/APC billboard but also whether KWASAA applies its regulations uniformly to billboards belonging to the ruling party, opposition parties and independent political actors.
The billboard removal is coming against the backdrop of increasing political contestation in Kwara and across Nigeria, as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 electoral cycle.
