Nearly 30 years after the death of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the rapper’s 1996 killing.
A Las Vegas jury reached the guilty verdict after deliberating for less than three hours, making Davis the first person to be convicted in the long-running case. The 63-year-old was accused of orchestrating the drive-by shooting that claimed Shakur’s life.
Prosecutors argued that Davis organised the attack after an altercation involving Shakur and Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at a Las Vegas casino on the night of September 7, 1996.
According to prosecutors, Davis obtained a firearm and gathered members of his group before searching for Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight. Shakur was riding in Knight’s BMW when a white Cadillac pulled alongside the vehicle and gunfire erupted.
Although Davis was not accused of pulling the trigger, prosecutors maintained that he played a central role in planning and facilitating the attack. Evidence presented during the trial included Davis’ previous statements and admissions about his involvement.
The conviction marks a major development in one of the most closely watched unsolved cases in music history. For decades, Shakur’s death generated numerous theories about the identity of the shooter and the motive behind the killing.
Davis has maintained that some of his public accounts were exaggerated and has indicated that he plans to appeal the conviction. He faces a possible life sentence, with sentencing scheduled for October 13, 2026.
Tupac Shakur was 25 when he was shot in Las Vegas. He died six days later from his injuries, leaving behind a musical legacy that has continued to influence generations of hip-hop artists.
