Tinubu to Transform Police Through Education Reform, Says Minister Alausa

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to strengthening the Nigeria Police Force through education-focused reforms, including the upgrading of police training institutions and the establishment of a new police academy campus in southern Nigeria.

Alausa made the disclosure while speaking on ongoing federal efforts to reform security sector capacity building, noting that the initiative is part of broader plans to improve professionalism, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the police.

According to him, the proposed reforms will prioritise the modernisation of curricula in police training schools across the country, with emphasis on contemporary security challenges such as cybercrime, intelligence gathering, forensic investigation, and community policing.

He added that government is also working to upgrade existing police institutions to meet international standards, ensuring that officers receive improved academic and practical training before deployment.

A key component of the plan, the minister said, is the establishment of a police academy campus in southern Nigeria, which is expected to decentralise training, improve accessibility for recruits, and expand capacity for officer development nationwide.

Alausa explained that the initiative reflects the administration’s belief that effective policing is closely linked to education and continuous professional development, stressing that better-trained officers will improve public safety outcomes and strengthen trust between citizens and security agencies.

The announcement comes amid ongoing national conversations about security sector reform, with stakeholders consistently calling for improved training, enhanced welfare for personnel, and adoption of modern policing strategies to address evolving security threats.

Security analysts have welcomed the proposal, noting that global policing standards increasingly emphasise specialised education and continuous training as essential components of effective law enforcement.

However, observers also caution that successful implementation will depend on adequate funding, inter-agency coordination, and sustained political commitment to long-term institutional reform.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu has in recent months reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, with education-driven reforms now forming part of broader institutional restructuring efforts.

The Ministry of Education said further details on timelines and implementation plans for the proposed police academy expansion and institutional upgrades will be communicated as consultations progress.
