Tinubu Says, Nigeria’s economy making progress despite reform pains

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic reforms, insisting that Nigeria’s economy is making steady progress despite the temporary hardships experienced by millions of citizens since the implementation of key policy changes.

The President stated that while the reforms have imposed significant short-term sacrifices on Nigerians, they are necessary to rebuild the economy, restore investor confidence and lay the foundation for sustainable long-term growth.

Speaking at a public engagement on Tuesday, Tinubu said the government’s economic policies are beginning to produce measurable results in critical sectors, adding that the country is gradually overcoming structural challenges that have constrained development for decades.

According to the President, reforms introduced by his administration were designed to correct longstanding distortions in the economy, improve fiscal stability and create an environment capable of attracting both domestic and foreign investment.

Tinubu maintained that difficult decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange reforms and efforts to increase government revenue, were unavoidable if Nigeria was to achieve lasting economic transformation.

He acknowledged that many Nigerians continue to struggle with rising living costs, inflation and reduced purchasing power but assured citizens that the government remains committed to implementing policies aimed at easing the burden on households while expanding economic opportunities.

The President pointed to improvements in public revenue generation, renewed investor interest and ongoing infrastructure development as indicators that the reforms are beginning to yield positive outcomes. He expressed optimism that continued policy consistency would further strengthen economic growth, create jobs and improve the country’s fiscal outlook.

Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians through targeted social intervention programmes, agricultural investments and initiatives aimed at boosting local production and reducing dependence on imports.

He appealed to citizens to remain patient, arguing that meaningful economic transformation requires time and collective sacrifice. According to him, countries that have successfully implemented major structural reforms often experienced initial difficulties before eventually recording sustained economic growth.

However, the President’s optimistic assessment continues to attract mixed reactions from economists, opposition politicians and civil society organisations. Critics argue that while macroeconomic reforms may be necessary, many Nigerians are yet to experience tangible improvements in their daily lives.

They point to persistently high inflation, rising food prices, exchange rate volatility and increasing transportation costs as evidence that the economic challenges confronting households remain severe. Some analysts have also called on the government to accelerate measures that directly improve productivity, strengthen manufacturing and expand employment opportunities.

Supporters of the administration, on the other hand, contend that the reforms have begun to stabilise key economic indicators and position Nigeria for stronger long-term growth. They argue that reversing the policies at this stage could undermine investor confidence and delay economic recovery.

Economic experts note that the ultimate success of the reform programme will depend on sustained implementation, improved governance, increased domestic production and stronger social protection mechanisms to cushion the impact on low-income families.

As the administration continues to defend its economic agenda, Nigerians will be closely monitoring future developments to determine whether the promised benefits translate into improved living standards, lower inflation, greater employment opportunities and a more resilient national economy. The coming months are expected to provide a clearer picture of whether the ongoing reforms can deliver the broad-based prosperity envisioned by the Federal Government.
