Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is mourning the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died on Monday while receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar.
The death was announced by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who expressed condolences to the president, the family and the nation. Burial arrangements are being made in Zanzibar, the family’s native region.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in 2021 when Samia assumed the presidency following the death of President John Magufuli. His position was historic because Samia became Tanzania’s first woman to serve as president.
The couple had been married since 1978 and had four children, including daughter Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is a politician and member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives. Hafidh was known for maintaining a relatively private life despite his wife’s prominent political position.
The news has prompted condolences from leaders across East Africa. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed sympathy with the Tanzanian president and her family, describing Hafidh as a distinguished son of Tanzania.
“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” Ruto said.
The development is significant because it comes as President Samia continues to lead Tanzania during her second term. She assumed office in March 2021 and became one of Africa’s most prominent female political leaders.
The death also highlights the personal dimension of public office, with the Tanzanian president now facing a period of mourning while continuing her responsibilities as head of state.
Hafidh’s death has brought renewed attention to the family behind Tanzania’s presidency and his historic role as the country’s first First Gentleman.
