Super Falcons: Deborah Abiodun Ruled Out for Rest of 2026 Season With Injury

Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season after suffering an injury that will require surgery.

Abiodun’s club, Washington Spirit, confirmed that the Nigerian midfielder has been moved from the 45-day injury list to the season-ending injury list. The 22-year-old is expected to undergo surgery this week as she begins her recovery.

The setback comes at a difficult time for Abiodun, who has endured a challenging period with both club and country. Reacting to the latest development, she wrote on Snapchat: “From World Cup heartbreak to this, 2026 must really be that year.”

Before the injury, Abiodun had featured in nine matches for Washington Spirit during the 2026 campaign, including four starts. She accumulated 320 minutes and had established herself as an important midfield option for the American club.

The injury is also a concern for Nigeria’s Super Falcons, as Abiodun is expected to miss the team’s upcoming 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros.

Nigeria are scheduled to face Comoros in the second round of the Olympic qualifying campaign on October 9 and 13. Abiodun’s absence could leave the coaching staff with fewer midfield options as the Falcons begin their bid to return to the Olympic women’s football tournament.

The development follows a disappointing international period for the young midfielder. Abiodun represented Nigeria at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and also featured in the team’s 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the World Cup qualification play-off. That result ended Nigeria’s record of qualifying for every Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.

Abiodun joined Washington Spirit in 2025 and has made 21 appearances for the club, scoring once and providing one assist.
