Rejection of Electoral Amendment; A setback for Democratic Transparency – Adamu Yusuf Gwary

The recent decision by the Nigerian Senate to reject critical provisions of the proposed electoral amendments particularly those aimed at strengthening the mandatory electronic transmission of election results is deeply concerning and represents a setback to democratic progress in Nigeria.

In a modern democracy, transparency is not optional; it is fundamental. Any move that weakens transparency in the electoral process naturally raises questions about intent and commitment to democratic ideals. Rejecting electronic transmission of results in this era is comparable to thieves voting against the installation of CCTV cameras not because surveillance is harmful, but because it exposes wrongdoing.

Electronic transmission of results is designed to protect the sanctity of the vote, reduce human interference, and restore public confidence in elections. By refusing to entrench this safeguard clearly into law, the Senate has chosen ambiguity over clarity and discretion over accountability.

Democracy does not fear openness. Credible elections welcome systems that allow citizens to verify that their votes truly count. Nigerians, especially young people and students, have consistently called for reforms that make elections freer, fairer, and more transparent.

As representatives of the people, lawmakers owe Nigerians laws that protect their votes not systems that benefit a few while the majority are left in doubt.

We urge all democratic institutions, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens to continue advocating for electoral reforms that strengthen transparency and accountability. Nigeria’s democracy must work in the light, not in the shadows.

LONG LIVE DEMOCRACY!
LONG LIVE COPDEM!!
GOD BLESS THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA!!!
