Peter Obi Welcomes Courtroom Scrutiny as Rift With Kenneth Okonkwo Deepens

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has defended his decision to pursue legal action against former ally Kenneth Okonkwo, insisting that the courts remain the proper venue for testing allegations and establishing the truth.

Obi’s position follows a series of allegations made by Okonkwo during media appearances, claims which Obi’s legal team described as defamatory and unsupported by evidence. In a pre-action letter issued through his lawyers, Obi demanded a retraction, public apology, and ₦5 billion in damages over statements he said damaged his reputation and public standing.

Explaining the rationale behind the legal action, Obi reportedly stated that litigation became necessary after Okonkwo indicated that he had even more allegations to reveal in the future. Rather than avoid judicial scrutiny, Obi welcomed it.

According to Obi:

“If anybody has any evidence of criminality against me, let them present it in court.”

“If anybody has any evidence of criminality against me, let them present it in court.”
“The court will provide an opportunity for all allegations to be properly examined.”
“Anyone with proof should come forward and present it before a competent court.”
Through his lawyers, Obi also stated:
“These are extremely grave, damaging and reckless imputations of bribery, extortion, fraud, financial dishonesty and criminality directed at the character, integrity, reputation and public standing of my person.”
His legal team further argued that the allegations:
“Falsely and maliciously represent our Client as a person who demands, solicits, organises and collects bribes; who extorts, defrauds and swindles political aspirants of their money; who is a fraudster, a scammer and a dishonest political actor.”
The demand letter also warned:
“Should you fail, refuse or neglect to comply with the above demands within the stipulated period, our Client shall be left with no option but to seek legal redress against you without further recourse to you.”
These statements underscore Obi’s position that allegations of criminal conduct should be tested through due process rather than media exchanges. His insistence on judicial scrutiny reflects a broader argument for accountability through legal institutions.

He further maintained that a court case would provide a transparent platform where every allegation could be publicly presented, examined, and tested on its merits.

Obi’s legal team argued that the allegations portrayed him as “a person who demands, solicits, organises and collects bribes” and as someone involved in criminal conduct—claims they insist are false and malicious.

The former Anambra governor’s stance reflects a broader principle often absent in Nigeria’s political space: that serious accusations should be backed by evidence and subjected to due process rather than trial by media. By inviting scrutiny in court, Obi appears to be signaling confidence that judicial proceedings—not public speculation—should determine the truth.

As the dispute between the two former political associates unfolds, Nigerians will watch closely to see whether the allegations ultimately find their way into court and whether the legal process can provide clarity in a controversy that has captured national attention.
