ABUJA — A political commentator, Great Imo Jonathan, has declared that there is “no basis for comparison” between former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that Obi’s pre-political career demonstrates a broader record of private-sector experience.
Jonathan made the assertion while comparing the professional backgrounds of the two politicians before their entry into active politics.
According to him, Obi spent several years working across banking, trading, manufacturing, importation and corporate management before becoming governor of Anambra State. He argued that this background, rather than political experience alone, should form part of the assessment of a leader’s capacity to manage the Nigerian economy.
Jonathan specifically highlighted Obi’s reported involvement in the banking sector, including his tenure as Chairman of Fidelity Bank and previous directorships in financial and investment-related companies.
He also pointed to Obi’s business activities through Next International Nigeria Ltd., describing the company as having interests in importation, distribution and international trade.
The commentator further cited Obi’s reported involvement with major companies and professional bodies, including participation in corporate boards and financial-sector initiatives, as evidence of his exposure to corporate governance, supply-chain management, logistics and capital-market operations.
Jonathan said Obi’s experience in business had exposed him to what he described as the practical challenges of establishing companies, managing costs, dealing with foreign exchange, importing goods, operating distribution networks and overseeing corporate institutions.
“Peter Obi has understanding of how businesses are started, what makes them work, how to grow businesses into giant companies, how to create employment, how to engage total value chains, how to run logistics, how global businesses interface, how factories operate, trading, distribution, banking governance, and board management,” Jonathan said.
He contrasted this with Tinubu’s career, challenging supporters of the President to present what he described as comparable evidence of private-sector achievements before Tinubu’s political career.
Jonathan also made serious allegations concerning the source of Tinubu’s wealth and political rise, accusing the President of benefiting from public resources. Those allegations are political claims by Jonathan and are not independently established by this report.
The statement is likely to intensify the continuing political debate over the professional records of Nigeria’s leading political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, a comparison of the two men’s backgrounds requires consideration of their substantially different career paths. Tinubu entered politics through the pro-democracy movement and subsequently served as a senator before becoming Governor of Lagos State, while Obi built his public profile primarily through business before entering electoral politics and later becoming governor.
Jonathan maintained that the ultimate test should be the demonstrable record of each politician before and during public office.
He challenged supporters of both camps to move beyond political rhetoric and provide verifiable records of their preferred candidate’s professional achievements, business history, governance record and contribution to economic development.
The debate over Obi and Tinubu is expected to remain a major feature of Nigeria’s political discourse as the country moves toward the 2027 elections.
