Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday held a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, during which both men discussed issues relating to Nigeria’s democracy, economy and the strengthening of public institutions.
According to Obi, the meeting focused on the state of the nation’s democracy, the economy, and the imperative of ensuring that Nigeria’s elections remain free, fair, credible and reflective of the will of the people.
The former Anambra State governor said the discussions also highlighted the importance of building stronger democratic institutions capable of sustaining good governance and national development.
Dr. Montgomery is expected to conclude his diplomatic assignment in Nigeria next month after serving as the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner.
Obi commended the British envoy for what he described as his constructive engagement with Nigeria and his contributions toward strengthening the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
He noted that the envoy’s tenure had been marked by support for Nigeria’s democratic and economic development, expressing appreciation for the friendship and cooperation extended to the country throughout his stay.
The NDC presidential candidate wished Dr. Montgomery success in his next diplomatic assignment and expressed optimism that the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom would continue to grow in the years ahead.
Obi reaffirmed his optimism about Nigeria’s future, reiterating his familiar message: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
