The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), , has launched a grassroots Permanent Voter Card (PVC) registration drive across rural communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), encouraging eligible Nigerians to register and actively participate in the country’s democratic process.
The initiative is designed to reach underserved communities where access to voter registration centres and voter education has often been limited. Volunteers participating in the exercise are sensitising residents on the importance of obtaining their PVCs, which remain the only legal requirement for voting in elections.
Addressing residents during the outreach, Obi stressed that democracy can only thrive when citizens actively participate in choosing their leaders. He urged Nigerians, particularly young people and first-time voters, not to be discouraged by prevailing economic and political challenges but to register and prepare to exercise their civic responsibility at the polls.
He emphasised that registering for a Permanent Voter Card is not about helping politicians or those seeking public office, but about empowering ordinary Nigerians to determine the quality of leadership that governs them. According to him, every PVC is a tool through which citizens can elect competent and accountable leaders capable of delivering quality healthcare, improving the economy, creating jobs, providing better schools, strengthening security, and ensuring good governance.
Obi maintained that sustainable national development begins with informed and active citizens who understand the power of their votes. He urged Nigerians not to sell their votes or surrender their democratic rights, noting that the future of the country depends on electing leaders with competence, integrity, and compassion.
According to the organisers, the campaign combines voter education, community mobilisation, and guidance for eligible residents on how and where to complete their voter registration. The exercise is expected to cover several rural communities across the FCT, with volunteers working alongside community leaders to increase awareness and improve voter participation.
The PVC registration drive forms part of the NDC’s broader grassroots engagement strategy aimed at expanding democratic participation and ensuring that more Nigerians, especially those in rural communities, are empowered to make their voices count through the ballot.
